LIBERTY FIELDS
GUINNESS ASIA
This film and an accompanying documentary tell the true story of Japan’s first-ever female rugby squad, recounting the team’s struggles, including their lack of a coach, doctor and support.
“It was back in the day when getting harassed sexually and otherwise was a given,” says Noriko Kishida, club founder. Flanker Yukio Dazai, adds: “Men expected women to be young, pretty and willing to quit their jobs for marriage.”.
Despite the obstacles, the team broke down social conventions and gender inequality, becoming the first to represent their country at the 1989 Toyko Women’s Rugby World Cup. Directed by Eliot Rausch.
